Between 1881 and 1895, several young Lakota women from our band married horse ranchers at Wood Mountain. Many of the ways of our people were useful on ranches. We knew how to cook big meals for round-ups and brandings. We knew how to make fry bread, and dry meat and berries. We knew how to tan hides and make moccasins. We did all those things. And we raised big families. We taught our children how to handle horses when they were young. They were good riders.
