Freddie Lecaine
1920-1967
Freddie Lecaine always wanted to be a cowboy. He began riding horses to school at Wood Mountain as a very small boy. As a teenager he worked as a teamster on threshing crews and for ranchers at Wood Mountain. He also competed in steer riding and bareback events at the Wood Mountain rodeo. During World War II Freddie Lecaine fought in Europe with the Canadian Army.
Like many of the Lakota at Wood Mountain, he was artistically talented. Sketching and drawing came naturally to him. In the 1960's he created several wooden cutouts of rodeo cowboys competing in a variety of events. In the cutouts bronc riders, calf ropers, steer wrestlers explode with colorful energy.
Besides his art Freddie Lecaine is remembered for his big black hat and for his ever-present smile.
