Joe Lecaine  

1926-1996

    Joe Lecaine, the son of Walter and Caroline Lecaine, grew up on the reserve at Wood Mountain. He attended the Indian school at Lebret. 
From the time he was a boy Joe was interested in riding and training horses. At age sixteen he began competing in the rodeo at Wood Mountain as a roping contestant. He competed as a calf roper until 1967. Among the horses Joe trained for the event were Nickel, Fox, and Joker.
    In 1967 Joe began team roping and eventually won four Alberta Feedlot Championships. Seven years later he won the International Century team

roping event at Las Vegas. That championship was his goal and a year after winning it, Joe retired from competitive team roping.
    Joe Lecaine left Wood Mountain in the 1970's   to work at a feedlot in Brooks, Alberta. He was living in Alberta at the time of his death.
