Canada's national museum of military history promotes public understanding of Canada's military history in its personal, national, and international dimensions. The Museum acquires and maintains artifacts in the National Collection and disseminates knowledge through research, exhibitions and public programs. During the First World War Canada's small navy grew to counter the threat of German naval activity. Visit the Canadian War Museum's acclaimed on-line exhibition Canada and the First World War, and learn more about the navy in its first major conflict.

During the Second World War, the staff of the century-old Hamilton Spectator newspaper kept its own monumental record of the war. This collection of more than 144,000 newspaper articles, manually clipped, stamped with the date, and arranged by subject, includes news stories and editorials from newspapers, mostly Canadian, documenting every aspect of the war. You are invited to explore the online database using either the Basic search or the detailed search, which includes a date searching feature. Short historical articles on key topics from the 1939-1945 time period, along with sample clippings from the collection, supplement this impressive resource of news information "as it happened".

The Museum's permanent exhibition presents Canada's military history from earliest times to the present, to show how it shaped the country and its citizens. Human conflict is explored through personal stories, art, artifacts, photographs, and interactive presentations. The LeBreton Gallery houses a CF-101 Voodoo jet, artillery pieces, tanks, a German midget submarine and many other vehicles, weapons and military items.

The Navy: A Century in Art
November 11, 2010 - March 20, 2011
The Navy: A Century in Art marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Canadian navy. A selection of paintings, from many of Canada's leading war artists, demonstrates how geography, history and war have shaped the navy through its first century of service. The works in this travelling exhibition are drawn mainly from the Museum's Beaverbrook Collection of War Art. They capture the diverse roles, traditions, and key moments for this national institution.

The Museum offers a wide range of meaningful learning opportunities for students from kindergarten through senior high school.
