"Westward the Star of Empire Takes Its Way" is the Imperial message at the bottom of this poster. Another important message says "There's Nothing To Fear" when immigrants arrive and settlers are "Protected By the Government", which implies the Royal Canadian Northwest Mounted Police. But what might British settlers fear? American-style lawlessness on the Canadian "frontier"? Contact with Native people, perhaps? Canadian Indians were hardly ever mentioned in immigration material except to reassure readers they had "nothing to fear".

These photographic images were specially commissioned by the Immigration Branch and probably used again in other formats: as illustrations for pamphlets, and as hand-coloured lantern slides, to accompany lectures by Canadian agents. None of these lantern slides has survived, unfortunately.
