Towards the middle of the front part of the kayak, a tear twisted its way around the kayak form more than 2.5 metres. This tear had been repaired several times using cardboard and nails, glued and painted fabric and plasticine. In the 1992 condition report on this kayak, in addition to newer damages, it was noted that both paint and glue from these earlier repairs had been spread over large areas of the skin covering. In some areas, the edges of the tear had been further torn. Some areas had been pushed in, and in several places, the materials used to repair the tear had become unglued or torn.
