Magnets were used to hold the Japanese paper (used to back or reinforce the splits) in place while the glue dried. Access to the split, thanks to the proximity of the cockpit allowed the use of magnets in the reinforcing or backing process. Magnets were employed as often as possible because of their ease of use and the speed with which they can be applied.
