The principle of the tourniquet is difficult to explain, however it was quite useful in reinforcing and backing inaccessible areas. The skin and the reinforcing paper were sandwiched between pieces of silicon-coasted cardboard which were linked together by a loop of thread passing through two holes in their centres. Once in place, the pieces of cardboard were tightened together using a brush handle (in this example) which is passed through the thread loop and twisted until sufficient pressure is thereby created to hold the paper and the skin together. The thread is then cut and the cardboard removed.
