Weights were used to maintain pressure while the Japanese paper was being glued to the skin as a reinforcing or backing. When present, the wooden structural elements were used (after being protected by a silicone-coated carboard), as supports for the weights. An additional pressure was maintained on this split by the use of a drinking straw intermediary.
