Albert Brown (Soak)
1894-1968
Albert Brown, the son of Tiopa and Frederick Brown, was born at Wood Mountain. He homesteaded on the SW 14 4-4 W3M. He was a single man at the time and resided with his parents. By the time he received patent in 1920 he had 55 acres under cultivation and a small herd of horses. He was always more interested in raising horses than in farming. He often worked as a cowboy on round-up crews for William Ogle and Harry Hourie.
In 1918 he married Jenny Haggai and they had four children - Bertha, Freddie, Leonard and Bernice. Albert and Jenny made saddles for several years. While he made the forms and cut and sewed the leather, she covered the trees with rawhide.
Albert Brown was one of the best bronc riders at the Wood Mountain Stampede. In the 1920's he placed in the bronc riding for six years.
Besides bronc riding he also competed in the wild horse races and worked as a hazer. At that time it was the hazer's job to keep the broncs from running into the bush as there wasn't any arena. He first entered the stampede in 1912 and
