The successful defence of Canada allowed Britain’s North American colonies to evolve into an independent transcontinental country.

The end of hostilities with Canada still in British hands represented a victory for Anglophones, Francophones, and First Peoples. But as the American threat declined, Canadian governments moved more aggressively to acquire First Peoples’ land.
