Trail of Tears
In 1830, U.S. President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act. Under the terms of this act and subsequent American policy, many Native American nations that fought against the United States during the War of 1812 were expelled from their homelands and forced to relocate west of the Mississippi River. The final major removal of the Cherokee in 1838 has become known as the Trail of Tears.
