Ongoing Tensions
The Treaty of Ghent ended the War of 1812 but did not eliminate British–American tensions. These tensions peaked during the American Civil War (1861-1865) but subsided with the Treaty of Washington, which resolved most points of dispute between the two powers. The British delegation to Washington in 1871 included Canada’s first prime minister, Sir John A. Macdonald (centre, standing). This marked the beginning of the relationship between the Canadian and American governments which continues today.
