Exhibition Theme - HomeA nursery-school for war workers' children
Elsie Hewland (1903-1942)
A cloakroom at a nursery school, with children putting on their uniforms and exploring their environment. The painting hints at the changes not just for the children but also for their mothers called into unfamiliar duties. Nursery schools were a new, essential but temporary support for women conscripted into full-time employment, with over 1,300 schools established by 1943.
