Will Ogilvie (1901-1989)
Refugees in Regalbuto, Sicily, in August 1943. In this painting Ogilvie heightens the plight of these displaced Italians by including references to the destruction of their homes in the background. His use of a monochromatic palette increases the pathos of the scene. Ogilvie's paintings and drawings from his time in Sicily are a uniquely complete record of both the military and civilian aspects of the campaign.
