Nolan, Sidney (1917-1992)

Informal portrait of Sidney Nolan, taken in Switzerland when the artist was aged 72; taken in 1989; donated by the artist's family to the collection of the Australian War Memorial P04607.001

Nolan studied at the National Gallery of Victoria School between 1934 and 1935, and later in Paris. He exhibited with the CAS in Melbourne in 1939. Enlisting in March 1942, he was sent to Victoria's Wimmera district for labouring and guard duties. In 1951 he began working on his epic Gallipoli series, comprising more than 250 works.
