Australian artist

Cossington Smith, Grace (1892-1984)

Informal portrait of artist Grace Cossington Smith walking down a Sydney street; donated by the artist's family to the collection of the Australian War Memoiral, P04563.001

Smith received a European modernist training from Dattilo Rubbo in Sydney between 1909 and 1912. She then travelled in the United Kingdom and Europe for two years. Her early work was conceived in a post-impressionist manner, but later she developed a Bonnard-like style concentrating on colourful interiors. She is now considered one of the leaders of the avant-garde movement in Australia.
