Most nineteenth-century potters confined themselves to making utilitarian items; but a few were more adventurous, making decorative objects from red earthenware covered with a brown or black glaze. The growing use of tobacco resulted in an increase in demand for items such as spittoons and tobacco jars, like this one made by the Dion Pottery, located near Quebec City.
