Inflation was a serious problem in the
early 1970s. In 1973, the cost of living jumped 9 per cent and food
prices by 17 per cent, while wages remained the same. Prime Minister
Pierre Trudeau's anti-inflation legislation was passed in an effort
to curb rising costs. The public response, as these English
cartoonists illustrate, was overwhelmingly negative.
