Fort Good Hope is a tiny
village located just below the "Ramparts" (left), at the mouth of
the Hareskin River (right).
Though Father Jean Séguin travelled to Tsiigehtchic over the course
of three decades, he spent most of his time in Fort Good Hope at the mission
of Notre Dame de la Bonne Espérance or Our Lady of Good Hope. Here we see
him (with the long white beard) standing with Brother Kearney and Father
Houssais in front of the mission house he helped build (early 1860s) which burnt in the
1960s.
When Father Séguin worked
on the church (mid 1860s) with Father Émile Petitot, he wrote his parents that "I don't think
it will last more than 30 years". The church, declared a national historic
site in 1977, has recently been restored.
