Stepped entrance passage

A stepped entrance passage is used to preserve the warmth of a semi-subterranean house. A person entering the house goes below ground in the passage, then up into the house. The warm air of the house remains trapped because the roof of the entrance passage is lower than the sleeping platform of the house.
