The Grouse (Pisté'i)
and Its Brood |
The grouse is one of the crests of the fireweed phratry. The
grouse represents the Mother and is always shown with her brood.
This section is a replacement for the original.
The grouse crest appears on other traditional objects as well. In
the picture on the right, from the re-dedication ceremony, two button
blanket representations of the Grouse Crest are shown. That on the
left shows the traditional representation of the grouse and its
brood. That on the right is a modern representation combining the
fireweed crest around the mother grouse and its brood; the half sun,
representing the house of Gim-sta-lox
("House-of-the-inside-the-half-Sun") can be seen in
the fireweed beneath the mother grouse.
