Art as an Expression of the Individual Self

In recent years, contemporary First Nations and Métis artists have focused on their individual place within the larger society. Although still rooted in their own cultural traditions, they have joined the global community of artists. Using a variety of materials and formal languages, they reflect universal concerns through intensely personal visions.

A new generation of Inuit, whether born and raised in settlements or living in southern Canada, have brought new impulses and approaches to Inuit art. Inuit artists are now less concerned with describing how things used to be in an idealized past. Instead, they express their personal experiences and aesthetics through their art.
