Archaeology

Archaeology seeks to know and understand the past through the study of material evidence. Usually this involves the excavation of archaeological sites; places where people lived or undertook some activity in the past. By analyzing and comparing the artifacts, animal bones, and other evidence found at such locations, archaeologists are able to reconstruct past life-ways and glimpse the broad patterns of ancient history. A great deal about the past is lost forever. But archaeology does provide a clear window of insight into the history of First Peoples on this continent dating back tens of thousands of years.

As with any scholarly or scientific discipline, archaeological knowledge about the past advances as old interpretations are tested against new information.
