An Aboriginal Presence
George Clutesi (1905-1988)
George Clutesi, of the Tse-Shaht
Band (Nuu-Chah-Nulth), attended the Alberni Residential School,
and then worked as a fisherman and in construction. In 1944, he
became the first Aboriginal artist to have a solo exhibition of
his work. Clutesi's book, Son of Raven, Son of Deer
(1967), the first anthology of Aboriginal stories published by
an Aboriginal person, was followed by Potlatch (1969).
Clutesi acted in several films, including the Claude Jutra film,
Dreamspeaker (1977).
